To embody the concepts of density and vastness, in matter and in the composition itself of the work; to thus provoke an intense sensation of absorption and weightlessness in the spectator; to renew, in this way, the modern artist's monochrome, conceptual and mystic experiments, following a logic similar to Pierre Soulages, who uses tar in his painting, or of Carl André, who arranges steel sheets on the ground, Eva Tourtoglou-Bony patches together rubber pieces. Her project is less about representing the world than about embodying its mystery. The waterproof matter and the elementary volumes she has been using since 1988 (after experiments with acrylic paints and cement), have something to do with the most indefinable among our objects of worship: the Black Stone of Mecca or fragments of meteorites. In order "to relate imaginary celestial mechanics", the artist cuts out silhouettes, folds them up, pierces them and fastens them, thus establishing allegories of receptacle and silence. She pays homage to concentration. She sometimes inlays or encloses volcanic stone, sand or a twig of eucalyptus; in each case, proof of the victory of time over organic life. Nurtered by literature and philosophy, passionate about astronomy, she watches for comets through a telescope, studies new geometries, is amazed at the number of exoplanets. "To free myself from matter by spreading it", that is her objective. The reality: to create new, strong and handsome forms.
